Batman est vieux, perclus de douleurs, aigri. Et pourtant, il va vivre sa plus belle aventure, celle qui va le propulser de nouveau au sommet. Nous sommes à Gotham, dans un futur proche. Les deux grands sont au bord d'une nouvelle guerre nucléaire. Les gangs font la loi. Les super-héros ont été bannis. Seul reste Superman mais il a vendu son âme et n'est plus que le bras armé de la Maison Blanche. Voilà dix ans que le "bat-signal" n'avait pas illuminé le ciel. Batman va rendosser sa cape pour un dernier combat... Par son génie du découpage alambiqué, par ses textes ciselés qui nous font vivre avec les héros, par l'ambiguïté de ses personnages, (Batman doute, prend des coups, s'engage dans des combats douteux), Frank Miller déniaise et revitalise le monde des comics. Et réussit l'impossible : faire vivre des super-héros dans la réalité quotidienne des lecteurs adultes. Les quatre épisodes, sortis en 1986 aux États-Unis, se sont vendus chacun à plus d'un million d'exemplaires. In 1977, a then unknown Akira Toriyama participated in an annual competition for new mangaka, sponsored by Shueisha in Monthly Young Jump magazine with the work, Awawa World, a short oneshot that features a mashup of concepts from superheroes to samurai to kaiju and it's all topped with fast-paced absurdist humor and even features attempts to mix modern scenarios with the feudal setting. Though his work was nominated, it ultimately didn't win. Later on in 1983, this manga would be republished in two parts in "Bird Land Press", the official newsletter of Toriyama's fanclub. The original master materials of this and his second one-shot "Mysterious Rain Jack" would be put on display during a touring art exhibition centered solely around Akira Toriyama's work which sprouted up in the 1990s and this is where unfortunately disaster would strike for during this exhibition. The master materials of Awawa World and Mysterious Rain Jack were stolen, making an official rerelease as of right now impossible to achieve.

At the end of the story, the Demon Lord, who was in the form of a dragon, was killed by the heroine. There was only one step left to let the world return to peace: to seal the soul of the Demon Lord. If the seal were to fail, then the returning Demon Lord would summon the fire of hell to burn the entire world. Only when the heroine would offer her most cherished treasure of her life, the seal would be finally completed. The treasure would not be taken away, it would only summon the power of the seal and give the heroine a new life. The heroine sacrificed all her "treasures", but neither her sword, her comrades, her lover, her king, her fellow men, nor even her property could summon the power of the seal. So the heroine thought of her daughter, who ran away years ago... Could her daughter be her treasure? What exactly would be the treasure to the heroine?
